In the past, a weakened Kenshin is found by a couple, Giichi and Satsuki. While staying at their home, Kenshin learns that Giichi was a former detective, who retired after his work led him into conflict with the Goyoto — mercenaries for the Meiji Restoration. Satsuki and Giichi discover soldiers of the new government hunting down combatants from the Battle of Ueno, urging Kenshin to leave. The Goyoto confront Giichi, who surrenders himself to keep his wife safe. However, they refuse to let them both live, leading Kenshin to enter the fight...
