Takashi and Kitamoto arrive at a bookstore that Kitamoto had gone to with his father, intending to surprise him with a book he always wanted. Takashi detects a yōkai presence and has his friend leave with him. He and Nyanko-sensei tail Kitamoto as he comes back, who is again told to leave by the brown-haired shopkeeper Kaeda, who is a yōkai from one of the ancient books who protects the store in place of the elderly owner while she sleeps. She tells Takashi of Dei, who has escaped a seal and has left paper spells with each of his body parts in different books that curses the reader...
