Upon returning home from school one day, Megumin discovers that her younger sister Komekko managed to capture a creature resembling a black cat. Fearing Komekko might try to eat the cat, Megumin adopts it and takes it to school with her, which immediately grabs the attention of her classmates. She is then able to convince the teacher that the cat is her familiar, and is allowed to bring it to class. Later, the teacher then informs the students that he will be taking them to an "augmentation surge", which involves the students killing forest creatures the teacher had frozen for them...
